Electrolytes

There are many things at work in our autonomic nervous system but for those of us with dysautonomia, often it isn't quite right. When we look to fix that, sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest impact!

Dysautonomia is essentially a dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system. This is responsible for regulating blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, and other automatic functions of the body that we don’t have to think about. We often discuss POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) which is a form of dysautonomia that can occur alongside hypermobility.

Though each person is different and can have their own unique set of symptoms, the most common can include

  • Rapid heart rate or extremely slow heart rate

  • Temperature dysregulation (always being hot or really cold)

  • Shortness of breath

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue

If your doctors say your blood pressure is good, your heart is strong, and you're healthy overall but you're still experiencing things like lightheadedness or increased heart rate when standing, you could very well have a form of dysautonomia! Since minerals such as salt, potassium, and chloride are needed to support your autonomic nervous system you may benefit from an electrolyte supplement especially if you usually drink a ton of water. Though the hydration is good for you, you may be diluting the minerals you get in from vitamins and food sources which doesn't help for those who need the extra support.

While you can absolutely just add more salt* to your food and become more aware of the minerals you’re getting in fruits & vegetables, but I’ve found a supplement to be the most helpful for me! My favorite is Re-Lyte because it comes in great flavors and has a large amount of minerals that help me feel better in my day-to-day. You can always find me with a water bottle full of electrolytes!

*there is risk to supplementing salt, especially with underlying conditions or high blood pressure. Always check with your doc before adding a supplement so you can determine the best or treatment for you. This is just what works for me and I have discussed it with my doc

Re-Lyte vs LMNT
Though Re-Lyte is my favorite, it’s not the only option out there for electrolytes! I made this video comparing Redmond Re-Lyte and LMNT, another popular brand.
