Being Nervous at Doctor Visits
Though we seek out health professionals for help and care, the concept of being nervous around doctors may hit home for many different reasons.
Doctors can be scary - we get it. Years of pain with no answers, invalidation, being told it’s all in your head, to lose weight, etc. Not only do many of us also have dysautonomia, a nervous system related disorder, but add some medical trauma in there and it makes things that much worse. We’d love to share our recommendations on how to best advocate for yourself.
Write things down before your appointment. Writing down or tracking your symptoms can help take the emotion out of it. This is great when your mind goes blank from anxiety. It helps if you physically take in the criteria if you suspect a certain diagnosis, but remember, this doesn’t guarantee that they will provide it.
Get a second opinion. This isn’t accessible to everyone, but ultimately there will be some people who are not a good fit for you. If your doc is not willing to work as a team with you, it may be worth seeking another provider. Google reviews go a long way in finding someone, or you can search the EDS Society healthcare directory linked below.
A diagnosis ultimately doesn’t define you. I think there is a lot of benefit to a diagnosis. I also think that some people may get “undiagnosed” this year as the clinical criteria is being updated. Whether you have hEDS, another type of EDS, HSD, or something else that involves hypermobility, your experience is still your experience and your symptoms are valid.
Navigating this is a lot, but good medical care can go a long way. We’re here to support you on this journey!
