The power of consistently showing up imperfectly
How do we get back on track when we stop our movement routine? This is a regular conversation I have with my clients and I’d like to offer you a new perspective on how to not lose progress when something gets in the way of your routine.
Most of us have been caught in the cycle: excited about a new routine → feeling good → making progress → then something stressful or out of routine happens and everything stops. You know that getting back will help you feel better but you have a mental block that won’t let you. This leads to less movement, more pain, and more stress as you fight with yourself.
Here are 3 ways to get back on track:
Just because you lost your routine doesn’t mean you went backwards. Stability is how the nervous system communicates with the rest of your body. This can be “lost”when you become dysregulated by even just one stressful event. The good thing is muscle memory is real and you can get it back quickly! Building these patterns now can carry you throughout your life and you should learn things faster and faster each time you come back to it.
As much as I want it to be, recovery isn’t linear. We should expect and plan for ups and downs throughout our stability journey and life in general. When downs happen, pull out your flare day routine or take some time off if necessary. What matters is that you do come back when you can.
All or nothing thinking can give us unrealistic expectations. Don’t underestimate the power of 1 minute of movement, 1 partial workout you were assigned, or 1 extra gram of protein. Every little bit is progress to help your future self.
I’ve built my brand on showing up imperfectly. I don’t expect you to be perfect either 💖
