Strength vs Stability Training
Did you know you can have good strength but not necessarily good stability? Let's talk about why!
So many of my clients are already strong, but still in so much pain! This is because strength and stability are different. To make it confusing, sometimes strength and stability workouts can look similar, but small differences in cueing, volume, reps, and intensity can impact which we’re focusing on.
Strength comes down to the capacity a muscle has to lift a certain load. Stability comes down to how the nervous system and muscular system work together to create movement.
This is why a stressful event or illness can feel like you suddenly lose all strength! Sure, being bedridden will lead to a decrease in endurance muscle fibers but for those who had something stressful happen that was then followed by you dislocating your knee, the walls bumping into you, and the car door shutting on your fingers? If it feels like the whole world is against you, that’s your nervous system out of whack.
In order to build stability, we have to address the brain. We use this with how we cue exercises, but everyone also has their own nervous system. If trying things in the past hasn’t worked, maybe you need individual support that works for YOUR hypermobile body and nervous system. This is what coaching calls are for!
