My Skin Care Routine

Do you tend to get compliments on your skin? Soft or velvety skin (without the 10 step skincare routine) may be a sign of hypermobility. Let's talk about what that means and how it might show up for different people -

Your skin is your body’s largest organ! Collagen and other connective tissues are found throughout your body, especially in your skin. If you have a connective tissue disorder this will impact your collagen, causing mild stretchiness, soft, or velvety skin.

Many of us don’t realize we have this but here are a few practical signs:

  1. You get skin compliments all the time. “Your skin is so soft! What skincare/lotion do you use?” (even though you don’t use any)

  2. Adhesives (bandaids, kinesiotape, etc.) don’t stick well to your skin

  3. You just found another bruise and you don’t know where it came from

According to the Ehlers Danlos Society, skin is hyperextensible if it stretches greater than:

  • 1.5 cm on the forearms

  • 1.5 cm on the back of the hands

  • 3 cm on the neck

  • 3 cm on the elbows

  • 3 cm on the knees

  • 1 cm on the palm of the hand

Do you get skin compliments a lot? Let me know!
