Seasonal Allergies & Hypermobility

Who else is congested right now? 🤧
Here we are again with changing seasons and lots of allergies. Your hypermobilty & allergies may actually have to do with one another. Let's talk about it!

There is a known trifecta that affects many of us: hypermobility, dysautonomia, and mast cell activation syndrome. Not everyone has all, but we do see a lot of overlap in our community. For me, I have the first two, but mast cell activation syndrome doesn’t impact me as much. Mast cells release histamine in the body. This is a normal byproduct, but we can get an overactivation or over sensitivity to this. That’s why we take an anti-histamine for allergy-like symptoms. Since realizing this correlation, I’ve been able to recognize some histamine related triggers including certain foods and environmental allergies that make my dysautonomia so much worse.

I actually tested negative for ragweed allergies, but I know I’m allergic to this. My allergist said this is actually a common experience, which also makes getting diagnosed so much harder. He said to continue treating the symptoms even if the test was negative.

I’m loading up on antihistamines right now, trying to stay hydrated, and resting more than usual. Knowing why this happens for me helps me to get through it. I also plan my workouts (indoor vs outdoor) around the ragweed levels in my area.

If you want to talk to a doc about this, I suggest seeing an allergist or immunologist in your area. You can ask for a referral from your primary care provider. I, personally, saw an allergist and get over the counter meds and prescription nasal sprays from my primary care provider.

Anyone else deal with this?
