Bracing vs Immobilization for Proprioception

I remember slamming my fingers in car doors far too often as a child. One day, it turned more into bumping into walls. Why did this happen? Keep reading to learn more!

Proprioception is your body’s awareness of where it is in space. This is a communication between our nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerves, etc.) and our muscles. They are in constant communication, but sometimes there’s disconnection between the 2 and we over or undercorrect. This is a complicated process, but can be improved with intentional practice.

Bracing is another tool we can use to improve awareness of where we are holding our joints. It’s important to note that bracing and immobilization are two different things. Bracing helps to support our joints but still allows movement. This does not cause you to lose muscle. Immobilization (such as a cast) does not allow movement which can lead to significant strength losses very quickly. In general, immobilization is appropriate for a fracture or after some surgeries. In short, don’t be scared of using a brace or assistive device if needed.

Check out the examples below on types of braces I like!
